Tailor Made Sample Itinerary Two - Introduction

An extensive 3 week trip including Tibet in addition to the more commonly visited highlights of China. Starting in Beijing and allowing a good amount of time to see this fascinating city before flying to Lhasa for a week in magical Tibet. Next stop Xian, getting there by high altitude train. After these destinations of marked contrast there is time to relax in the stunning countryside around Guilin and Yangshuo before finishing up in sprawling Shanghai for some big city living.

  Day 1
 
 
 
Beijing: Arrive Beijing by plane with a transfer from the airport to your hotel. After lunch a half day private tour to see the Pandas at Beijing Zoo and then take a boat from the Zoo along the imperial canal to the Summer Palace with a tour there. Return to hotel with own dinner arrangements (perhaps from the recommendations in our 100+ page Trip Guidebook) and overnight hotel.

  Day 2
 
 
Beijing: After breakfast a full day private tour to three of Beijing's must visits - the Temple of Heaven, Tianmen Square and the vast Forbidden City (including lunch). Return to the hotel and overnight.

   
    Day 3
 
Beijing: After breakfast a full day excursion to the Great Wall at Mutianyu, perhaps China’s most famous landmark. After lunch, a drive to the Ming Tombs along the Sacred Way lined with giant marble figures and animals guarding the tomb area for deceased Emperors of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD). Return to the hotel to relax before an evening visit to a Shaolin Martial arts show (including transfers to and from). Overnight hotel.

   
    Day 4  
Beijing: After breakfast a private tour to the Olympic stadium, Water Cube and walk around the Olympic Green (if you wish to enter the Stadium or Water Cube this can be paid for locally - about £9 per person). After lunch (included) step back in time with a visit to Beijing's Hutongs and finish the day up with a traditional roast duck dinner.

   
    Day 5  
Beijing to Lhasa: After breakfast transfer to Beijing airport for a flight to Lhasa (via Xian). Afternoon arrival in Lhasa (3,650m) with transfer to your hotel, time to relax and acclimatize and overnight. 

   
    Day 6  
Lhasa: Full day tour in Lhasa including the sacred Jokhang temple and the extraordinary Potala Palace, once home to the Dalai Lamas. Overnight Hotel

   
    Day 7  
Lhasa: Day tour out of the city to Ganden Monastery , one of the three most important university monasteries in Tibet. After, visit a Tibetan family  and some time to hike in the hills before returning to Lhasa and overnight.

   
    Day 8  
Lhasa: Depart Lhasa by jeep to Samye, the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet. Continue onto Tsethang. Overnight in a hotel.

   
    Day 9  
Lhasa: Continue on to Gyantse crossing the 4,780m Kamapala pass, the vivid blue Yamdrok lake and Norjing Glacier. Overnight in Gyantse (3,850m).

   
    Day 10  
Lhasa: Cultural visit to the Pachor Chode monastery including the Kumbum, Gyantse town, Tashi Lunpo monastery and a local market. Overnight Hotel.

   
    Day 11  
Lhasa: After breakfast a leisurely return to Lhasa with more time to stop along the way for photos. Free evening and overnight Hotel.

   
    Day 12  
Lhasa to Xian: Transfer to and an early morning departure on the train to Xian. Relax and enjoy the high plateau scenery. Overnight on the train with own lunch and dinner arrangements today.

   
    Day 13  
Aboard the train to Xian: Full day on the train to enjoy the scenery before and evening arrival in Xian. Transfer to your hotel and overnight. All meals own arrangement this day.

   
    Day 14  
Xian: After breakfast a full day private tour to the Terra cotta Warriors, Wild Goose Pagoda, Bell Tower and Shanxi Historical Museum as well as a city tour including Xian's towering city walls. Overnight hotel.

   
    Day 15  
Xian to Guilin: After breakfast a half day private tour to the Yangling Mausoleum (China's first underground museum)  including lunch. After lunch transfer to the airport for a flight to Guilin with transfer to your hotel on arrival, free time and overnight.

   
    Day 16  
Guilin: After breakfast a full day private tour to the impressive 800 year old rice terraces of Longji Titian and the colourful ethnic Zhuang Village of Ping An (lunch included). Return to Guilin and overnight hotel.

   
    Day 17  
Guilin to Yangshuo : After breakfast start your trip down the Lijiang River to relaxed Yangshuo. Cruise through the stunning karst scenery while having lunch on board. After lunch disembark in Yangshuo with a transfer to your hotel and a cycle tour of the surrounding countryside with guide. Overnight in Yangshuo.

   
    Day 18  
Yangshou to Guilin to Shanghai: After breakfast return to Guilin with a full day private tour including the Reed Flute Cave, Elephant Hill and Fuboshan Hill (lunch included). Late afternoon transfer to the airport for a flight to cosmopolitan Shanghai. Transfer on arrival in Shanghai to your hotel.

   
    Day 19  
Shanghai: After breakfast a full day private tour to Shanghai's  Yuyuan  Gardens, Old City and the Bund including a visit to a silk factory (lunch included). Acrobats visit in the evening. Overnight hotel.

   
    Day 20
 
Shanghai: A free day in Shanghai to relax and shop. Overnight hotel.

   
    Day 21
 
Shanghai: After breakfast transfer for your departure from Shanghai's Pudong airport. To get to the airport you will go via the super fast Maglev train - the only Maglev in commerical operation in the world.
