|
| |
This extension includes the major historic, cultural and religious sights of the three Newari cities of the Kathmandu Valley - Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur as well as a glimpse of Newari village life. Each of the three cites is centered around its Durbar Square where museums, temples, courtyards and squares reveal the best of traditional art, crafts and architecture.
Day 1 - Kathmandu:
Kathmandu: Arrival in Kathmandu, check in to your hotel, freshen up and then a sightseeing program that includes the main historic and religious sights of Kathmandu. Kathmandu’s Durbar Square is a constant, teeming mass of life. With over 50 monuments, some dating back to the 12th century, the most famous are the remains of the old Royal Palace and the Kumari Bahal, residence of the living goddess. Tibetan Buddhists are mostly found around the great stupa of Boudhanath - making a holy circumambulation or within the maze of temples and stalls surrounding it. The Valley’s holiest Hindu temple is equally alive with atmosphere and devotees - Pashupatinath is one of the most sacred shrines to Shiva on the entire sub-continent. It is situated on the banks of the Bagmati River, whose waters offer the same guarantee of release from rebirth as the Ganges. The same promise applies to the dead and this is also Nepal’s most important Hindu cremation site. Return to your hotel in Kathmandu and overnight.

Day 2 - Kathmandu and Bhaktapur:
On a wooded hill to the west stands the incredible golden-topped stupa of Swayambhunath, dating back at least as far as the 5th century. It is the most sacred of all Buddhist sites in Kathmandu and Newari Buddhists are the most fervent devotees.
Bhaktapur, founded in 889, was once capital of the whole Valley. As well as an impressive Durbar Square and numerous temples, Bhaktapur is famous for its pottery - whole streets are filled with pieces of all shapes and sizes set in the sun to dry. Return to your hotel in Kathmandu and overnight.
Meals: B|-|-
Day 3 - Patan and Newari villages:
Once an independent Kingdom, Patan lies only a few kilometers south of Kathmandu but is has quite a different atmosphere. Patan’s Durbar Square contains some of the finest Newari urban architecture in all of Nepal as well as Hindu and Buddhist monuments. The villages of Bungamati and Kokana offer a fascinating glimpse of rural life in the Kathmandu Valley. In both villages life takes place more on the streets than inside with villagers spinning, caring for children, gossiping, processing crops in the sun. Wood carving is a tradition alive and strong here and it is possible to see beautiful pieces being produced, including doors and window frames. Bungamati is also one of the two homes of the rain god, Raato Machhendranath. Kokana is particularly renowned as a producer of mustard oil. Return to your hotel in Kathmandu and overnight.

Day 4 - Kathmandu departure:
Free time in Kathmandu until a transfer to the airport for your onward flight. End of services or continuation on a another tour.

Trekking around the Kathmandu Valley offers insight into the lives, history, culture and religion of Nepal. Each season has something special to offer, planting, harvest and a changing profusion of wild flowers. From viewpoints on the valley rim (1,000-2,800m) Everest is visible to the east and Annapurna to the west. The Himalayan dawn in Nagarkot is awe-inspiring.
Day 1 - Kathmandu to Nargarkot:
Depart Kathmandu by taxi with your guide to the Changu Narayan temple complex which is a wonderful place to relax and observe. Dating back to the fourth century AD, there are priceless sculptures here, including those of the Hindu god Vishnu, his steed Garuda, and a Mall king and queen. After visiting Changu Narayan temple it is mostly an uphill walk but the fine scenic and cultural variety and spectacular view of the Valley make s it worth the effort. This walk goes through Chhetri settlements and green terraced rice paddies until Nagarkot. From view points Nagarkot offers a justifiably famous panorama from the Annapurna Himalaya in the west to the Khumbu Himalaya in the east. Overnight in Nagarkot.

After a short descent, there is a gradual climb of one-and-half hours to Namobuddha stupa, where legend states that a Buddha incarnated as a prince came across a starving tigress about to devour a child, so he compassionately offered parts of his body to the tigress. A four-hour walk south is Panauti, a charming medieval village, which is considered a teasure-trove of Newari architecture and where you will overnight.
