Mount Kailash is considered holy by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains and in the past has been referred to as "the centre of the world." A look at the map will tell you why as within a 30 mile radius of the mountain are the sources of the mighty rivers Indus (north called "Sindhu" in India), Sutlej (in west), Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsang-po in east), and Karnali (largest tributary to the Ganges in south). The journey to this mountain is as much of a highlight as the destination itself - scenic, spiritual and one of the ultimate Tibet adventures.

What there is to see...

The Mountain itself is the reason for the week plus journey to get here. Kailash is a beautiful mountain but the added and significant spiritual dimension and often large scale presence of pilgrims make this a very special place to visit. You are likely to do just one circumnavigation of the mountain over a leisurely 2 days but many pilgrims will do the prescribed 108 circuits.
The journey to and from Kailash is an unforgettable high altitude adventure with the nomadic grasslands, wild rivers and the beautiful Lake Manasarovar all highlights along the road.

Best time to visit Mt Kailash

May through to early October is the only feasible time to visit as there is nowhere close to stay in the winter months. Accommodation is basic to say the least and nights sub-zero.

The blend of overland adventure, scenery and remoteness make this a superb destination for those with the time and who don't mind a little roughing it!
