China planning guide visa and red tape

The Chinese Visa

Everyone requires a Chinese visa but the good news is that it is easy to obtain although you should allow plenty of advance planning. Normally visas are issued up to 3 months in advance of travel and are valid for stays of up to 30 days. You need one fully blank page and minimum 6 months validity of your passport. Allow plenty of time to obtain the visas in order to avoid last minute panics and embassy express fees!

How to Obtain the Chinese Visa

There are two ways a Chinese visa can be obtained:

    • Through the Chinese Visa Application Service Centres (CVASC) which are worldwide. In the UK they have offices in London and Manchester. CVASC is the official visa service of the Chinese embassy and they offers a postal visa service or you can make an appointment to visit one of their offices. More information can be found on their website. We can provide any advice and supporting paperwork you may need if you have booked your trip through us.

    • Through a specialist visa agent. In the UK we recommend Travcour and in the USA A.Briggs.

The Tibet Travel permit

A necessary piece of paper and not straightforward to obtain. But not to worry! We apply for this for you once you have obtained your Chinese visa. More details will be given on booking a Tibet trip with us.

The Nepalese Visa

Required by all tourists but easy to obtain either directly from the Nepalese embassy, through a visa agent or (as at January 2012) at the airport in Kathmandu or China Tibet land border.
