China Destination Guide -  Yuanyang

A favourite with photographers, the Yuanyang rice terraces have been fashioned from the hillsides by the Hani people over centuries. Best viewed at sunrise and towards sunset when the paddies reflect the sun-setting sky turning the terraces into what has been described as a "silver ladder." The climatic conditions here in the steep valleys also make it a prime tea producing region with the refreshing Yunwu tea being a favourite.

  • The best place to see the terraces is in the south of Yuanyang County the terraces cover the mountainside extending 2,000 meters from the mountain top down to the valley. In winter and spring each year the valley is filled with dense mists leaving the peaks of the mountains floating like islands in a sea of cloud.
