China Destination Guide - Xishuangbanna

China's little slice of Thailand - the name Xishuangbanna is actually a Chinese approximation of the original Thai name "Sip Sawng Panna" meaning "12 Rice-Growing Districts" It is a relaxed part of the south of Yunnan province. Here you will find tropical forests, water-splashing festivals, South East Asian villages, great trekking and the fantastic cuisine of the Dai Ethnic minority all making this a deservedly popular destination.

small square  What there is to see...

  • Damenglong is a sleepy village around 70km from Jinhong surrounded by laid back countryside perfect for exploring by foot or by bicycle.
  • Menghan is another sleepy town, at least during the day. By night it is a lively spot, at least lively by the laid back standards of Xishuangbanna.
  • The Dai minority's water splashing festival lasts for three days from April 13 to 15th.
  • Trekking from village to village is a favourite pass time for travellers. The walking is easy going and you can stay in locals houses overnight.

small square  Best time to visit:

September to May is the best time to visit this region. June to August is officially the rainy season and this region gets its fair share. Winter months are mild and pleasant.

small square  Best reason to visit:

The relaxed tropical feel of neighbouring South East Asia is the best reason, especially if you do not have the time to visit Thailand or Laos on your trip.

small square  Our last word:

Although unlikely to be visited on its own this area is a perfect add-on to any trip to Yunnan province if you can avoid the rainy season.
