China Destination Guide - Wuzhen

Wuzhen is another of the water towns close to Shanghai and has been restored to what historians believe it looked like in the Qing Dynasty (16th Century). The town itself dates back to the Tang Dynasty when Xian was the imperial capital and trade along the silk road the key to China's wealth. Wuzhen, along with Suzhou and other water towns were born out of their ability to produce silk which they long held a secret and which paid for their development.

small square  What there is to see...

  • The former residence of Mao Dun, a well-known Chinese revolutionary writer, was the Mao family home for many generations and witnessed the growth of this  revolutionary and writer. It is a good example of the local courtyard homes.
  • Pavilion of Visits to Lu is a teahouse that obtained its name from an accidental meeting between Lu Tong, the owner, and Lu Yu, the Patron Saint of Tea in Tang Dynasty (618-907). The teahouse enjoys a broad view of Guanqian Street and provides visitors with pleasant relaxation.
  • Bridge in Bridge refers to Tongji Bridge crossing the river from east to west and Renji Bridge running from south to north and joining the former at one end.

small square  Best time to visit Wuzhen

April and May and September, October and November are the best but December and January are also not bad as well as March. Summer months are hot, humid and rainy but that doesn't stop people visiting.

The Western side of the town at night is spectacularly lit. It may feel a little like a museum but it is very well done - it could be Lijiang without the mass of tourists!

An easy day trip from Hangzhou it is well worth the trip, especially if you are missing Suzhou or Tongli. An overnight stay in the west town is best to appreciate Wuzhen by night.
