China Destination Guide -  Wulingyuan

Wulingyuan is a collection of 243 peaks surrounded by over 3000 karst upthrusts, a concentration not seen anywhere elsewhere in the world. Inspiring Chinese painters and poets for centuries in 1990 it was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. To add to the scenic splendour is a bounty of rare flora and fauna, raftable rivers, Asia's largest cave system and the area is also home to 3 ethnic minorities, the Tujia, Miao and Bai.

small square  What there is to see...

  • Huangshi village is situated atop of one of the peaks and takes a climb of 3,878 steps to reach (or you can take a cable car!)
  • Hiking along the numerous well-maintained trails the park offers is one of the best ways to appreciate the ever changing scenery.
  • Tianzi peak is the regions highest at 1,250m and is worth the climb for the views over this extraordinary landscape.
  • If climbing up isn't for you climbing down into Jiutian cave might be. It is Asia's largest cave chamber. More easily accesible is Shuanghe cave featuring a series of limestone caverns interconnected by a subterranean river.
