China Destination Guide -  Tiger Leaping Gorge

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a contender for the deepest gorge in the world being 3,900 meters from the river at the bottom to the top of the peaks of Haba Shan to the west and Yulong Xueshan to the east that flank it. It is one of the best known treks in China although it can now also be done by bus as a road has recently been carved out along the entire 15km of the gorge. Either way, it is well worth the trip for the views.

  • The Gorge itself and the astonishing views it affords are the reason to visit. If you opt to trek the gorge it will take from 2 to 4 days depending on how quickly you want to take it. There are local style places to stay along route and food can also be obtained.

The trek is not to be undertaken lightly and good preparation is required at any time of year. April, May and the start of June as well as September and October are the best months. The summers are wet and not ideal for hiking as the risk of paths being blocked by landslides is high.

For the amazing scenery and to have trekked along such a deep Gorge. This is also one of the few organised treks that is easy to do in China.

A full exploration of Yunnan province is not complete until you have at least driven the Gorge. One of the best treks in China usually started from Lijiang.
