China Destination Guide -  Shenyang

A one time capital of Manchu China much of Shenyang today is an urban industrial sprawl full of some of the most aggressive drivers in China ... BUT! there are also fine examples of Manchu architecture making Shenyang worth a stop on any route through Northern China. Historically a Manchu stronghold, in the late 19th Century the Russians had much influence here and the city was known as Mukden then.

small square  What there is to see...

  • Shenyang's Imperial Palace is like a mini version of the Forbidden City and an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Constructed between 1625 and 1636 by Manchu emperor Nurhachi (1559-1626) it was the headquarters of the Qing dynasty until 1644. The octagonal Dazheng Hall with its coffered ceiling and elaborate throne was where Nurhachi's grandson, Emperor Shunzhi, was crowned. The central courtyard buildings include ornate ceremonial halls and imperial living quarters
  • Also on the UNESCO list is Fu Ling Tomb, the final resting place of Nurhachi and his mistress.

small square  Best time to visit Shenyang

April to October are the best months. Winters are cold and often snowy and a good time to visit if you can combine with the Harbin Ice Lantern Festival.

small square  Best reason to visit Shenyang

The Imperial Place is the best sight to see but some would argue that Shenyang is more about experiencing a northen China industrial powerhouse.

small square  Our last word on Shenyang

A city for those curious to see a prosperous industrial part of China off the tourist trail or for those with a particular interest in the Qing Dynasty.
