China Destination Guide - Shanghai 上海

Shanghai aims to be a vision of China's future and is hurtling towards it's goal of being China's financial capital and eclipsing its rival Hong Kong. There are few cities in China that are such a testament to China's phenomenal growth of the last few decades and what it perhaps lacks in historical sites it more than makes up with its sheer energy and dynamism giving you a taste of the New China that is making it's mark on the world stage.

TCTC Tip: Consider visiting Hangzhou and Suzhou along with Shanghai - both possible day trips!

small square  What there is to see in Shanghai:

  • The Bund running along the Huangpu River. Once the skyline of this city it has now been outgrown by the towering skyscrapers of Pudong. However, it still gives off a sense of old world charm from the not too distant past.
  • Pudong is Shanghai's new financial district with ever taller skyscrapers sprouting up on an almost monthly basis.
  • The French Concession with a more laid back feel and home to many of the city's stylish bars and restaurants.
  • The Yuyuan Gardens - one of Shanghai's few historical gems where you can get your fill of the old China of pavillions, ponds and tea houses.
  • Shopping and nightlife - Shanghai has some of the best of both in Mainland China - a great way to finish your trip.

April and May as well as September, October and November are the best but December and January are also not bad, if a little chilly, as well as March. Summer months are hot, humid and rainy but also heavlily visited.

The stroll along the Bund, particularly at night, still has to be the highlight of Shanghai as you see the best of the Colonial architecture of Shanghai while getting fantastic views across the Huangpu River to Pudong, the heart of new Shanghai.

This is a city you will be hearing more and more of in the coming years and is a must see for anyone interested in knowing where new China is going as well as having a few glimpses into the decedant Shanghai of the colonial times.
