China Destination Guide -  Longji & Pingan

Longji, also known as the Dragon's Backbone Rice terraces, and the 600 year old Zhuang Village of Pingan are deservedly popular day and overnight destinations from either Guilin or Yangshuo. The terraces are set above and around the villages and provide fabulous backdrops to the scenes of village life and you don't have to walk too far along the many paths to escape the masses from local tour groups.

small square  What there is to see...

  • The Rice Terraces are the chief draw and stretch all the way up the peaks in this area. The best views are from higher up above Pingan.
  • Pingan is the most popular of all the small villages in this area and is picturesquely perched on the steep mountainside. If you were to stay overnight this would be the place to do so.
  • Trekking - there a numerous opportunities for day walks in this area - just following the paths that weave through the villages and rice terraces.

small square  Best time to Visit the Longji & Pingan

April to October are the best months although there can be rain. The winter months tend to be dry but the rice terraces do not look at their best then.

small square  Best reason to visit the Longji & Pingan

The village of Pingan is very picturesque but it is the rice terraces that are the main draw here.
