China Destination Guide - Huangshan

If you can be on this mountain in the right weather conditions you will come away like many an ancient Chinese poet and painter feeling you have seen one of China's top sites. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Huangshan offers you the scenery seen in so many traditional Chinese paintings with the tops of peaks seemingly floating above cloud seas. Much of the mountain area is accessible thanks to up to 60,000 stone steps although some of the paths are not for those who have issues with heights!

What there is to see...

Beginning to Believe Peak is a mecca for photographers trying to capture the vertically stunning scenery of vertical slivers of rock clad with knarled pines trees.
Climbing Huangshan's peaks is all part of the experience and the paths are easy to follow throughout these mountains. If you get too tired you can feel like an emperor and travel the mpountain paths by sedan chair.
Staying on top of the mountain is essential in order to see the famous sun rise as pictured above.
For the fit with a good head for heights the area around the North West Canyon has breathtaking scenary and gravity defying paths.

Best time to visit Huangshan

April and May and September and October are the best months as for much of China although the summer is also fine as once up the mountain the weather is cool. In winter there can be snow and ice to contend with which can make the paths slippery but also provide some of the most amazing scenery China has to offer.

Best reason to visit Huangshan

Catching the sunrise is the aim of all those who come to Huangshan and stay amongst the high peaks. Guaranteed to be different every day it is often spectacular nad well worth the early rise and cold during much of the year. We recommend staying 2 nights on the mountain to maximise the chance of seeing an amazing sunrise.

Our last word on Huangshan

Scenically these mountains are difficult to beat and being relatively accessible from either Hangzhou or Shanghai make them a top draw and well worth adding into any China trip in this area. Overnighting on the mountain itself is essential to catch the sunrise despite the high cost of accommodation.
