China Destination Guide - Hong Kong 香港

Hong Kong is still a mecca for travellers and for good reason. Still distinct from Mainland China this city state is often a start or end point for a trip to China. Aside from having one of the worlds most impressive skylines (pictured above) Hong Kong also offers fine food, vibrant nightlife, world class shopping and tranquil islands dotted with timeless temples and fishing harbours. All this but a stone's throw from the Central business areas.

What there is to see in Hong Kong:

View Central's famous skyline, preferably from a bar such as Felix on the top floor of the Peninsula Hotel.
Take a trip to The Peak for breathtaking views of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.
Disney Land if you are with the kids, the nightlife of Lan Kwai Fong if you're not.
Boat trips to the outlying islands such as Cheung Chao, Lamma and Lantau for hiking, sleepy temples and superb harbourside seafood restaurants.
In the right season try your luck on the horses at Hong Kong's famous Happy Valley Racecourse.
Shop, shop, shop - at least if Hong Kong is at the end of your trip!

Best time to Visit Hong Kong

From October to March is the best period for visiting Hong Kong as the oppressive heat and humidity of the rest of the year is absent. It can get surpisingly cool in Hong Kong in February and extremely wet in the summer months.

Best reason to visit Hong Kong

The vistas! Either from Kowloon looking to Hong Kong Island or from the Peak but we think best enjoyed along with a Gin & Tonic from the Felix bar at the top of the famous Peninsula Hotel.

Our last word on Hong Kong

Although it seems some other Chinese cities, most notably Shanghai, are catching up these days Hong Kong still has something special that sets it apart and deserves to be on the must see list of China.
