China Destination Guide - Emeishan

Emeishan is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China and now a UNESCO world heritage site and is 150km south of Chengdu. The mountain is 3,099m high so warm clothing is needed year round. It is studded with temples and criss-crossed with tracks and if you have clear weather the views from the temples can be enchanting. It is possible to see Emei Shan in a day but longer is preferable as the most serene spots are also the ones off the beaten track. Often visisted in conjunction with Leshan.

What there is to see...

Wan-nian Monastery is a large monastery full of friendly monks with a fantastic statue of the Puxian Bodhisattva, who is depicted as riding a white elephant with six tusks.
Leiyin Monastery is hidden away in the mountain's valleys but well worth finding.
Baoguo Si temple contains a huge bronze bell that they say can be heard 10 miles away when run.
Jin Ding Si temple near the summit offers fantastic views on a clear day, especially if you are above the clouds.

Best time to visit Emeishan

April to October is the busiest time. Over the winter months it can get very cold and slippery on the mountain trails and snow is common but this can add to the magic of Emei Shan.

Best reason to visit Emeishan

As with many of China's sacred mountains it is the mix of scenery and temples which makes the experience so worthwhile and if the weather allows the combination of the two it is unforgettable.

Emeishan is a popular stop for those visiting Sichuan and is often visited in conjunction with Leshan. We think it is an essential stop on any tour of Sichuan province.
