China Destination Guide - Dali 大理市

Dali is one of Yunnan Province's highlights along with Lijiang and is blessed with a stunning location sandwiched between mountains and Erhai Lake. This area is populated by the Bai ethnic minority and much of the charm is getting out of Dali itself and meeting the local people although the town itself has much of historical interest.

TCTC Tip: Dali is almost always visited between Yunnan's two highlights of Kunming and Lijiang.

small square  What there is to see in Dali:

  • The Three Pagodas (pictured above) are amongst the oldest structures in South West China and dominate their surroundings. The highest is 70 meters tall.
  • Chongsheng Temple behind the three pagodas is built in the traditional Yunnanese style with three layers of buildings with a view of mountain peaks in the background. Restored it now houses a museum chronicling the restoration of the Three Pagodas.
  • Boat trips on Erhu lake, often to visit small villages are relaxing as is hiring a bicycle and heading into the surrounding countryside.
